Day 10 - 20th April

This morning we had three separate groups for the morning; Digi Tech to Google, early start and shopping around the Rockefeller Centre (again) or sleep in.

Digi Tech:
Today the DigiTech group were joined by Tom and we headed to visit Google. Alex's cousin Liam worked at a Google office too far for us to reach for a day trip so he kindly arranged for us to be shown around by another willing Kiwi (Andrew) working in the New York office.

The Google building is only 15 floors high but is the 4th largest in the City by square-foot sizing. With a former life as shipping distribution building it had large elevator shafts that made moving between floors a pleasure. Each floor had a theme, the areas were vibrant, and very comfortable. There were kitchens well stocked with drinks, fruit and other  snacks only a short walk from anywhere, and large serviced dining areas for meals and barista made coffees (NZ style!). We saw staff using scooters to aid getting across the large site quickly. (We were not allowed to take photos inside).

Andrew shared about his personal experiences with working in a smaller company before moving to Google, including the interviewing processes.

After our final thanks and goodbyes we headed down the road to visit the Tesla showroom and briefly drool over their beauty before catching the train to South Ferry for Liberty Island.

We then all met at Battery Park to take the Ferry to the Statue of Liberty. It is funny how small it looks from Manhattan Island yet how large it actually is! Some students walked up to the Pedestal and looked out over the ocean, what an amazing view, very windy through, also a bit scary looking up at her from such a great height. When we returned back to Manhattan Island we took the Subway to the Met Museum. "We met at the Met and sat on the step". The Museum was absolutely incredible, a little overwhelming as there is artefacts from all countries and different mediums, we only had enough time to see a little bit as you would need entire day to get through it all. Myself and Mrs Cropp looked at the Egyptian Art and The American Wing which included photo realistic oil paintings and a four story classical American house to scale. We got told off for getting to close to one piece of art because we were trying to figure out if it was painted or not, thats how incredible it was !
A lovely walk through Central Park took us back to the hostel for dinner and some students did some shopping afterwards.
We are all very sad that tomorrow is our last day in New York but look forward to out adventure in Washington DC.

"Hey Miss Liberty! Down here!"

We get so excited every time we see a squirrel
