Day 9 - 19th April

The DigiTech group joined the foodies today for a trip around the Lower East side.

In the afternoon for five of the students was spent at the 9/11 National Memorial museum. The museum was a spectacular and humbling tribute to the events of 9 September 2001 as well as the events before and after.

The ground zero level now consists of two memorial pools which are in the footprints of the twin towers. The museum sits between them and extends below the ground.

The museum has the foundations of both towers amongst it as well as artifacts and history from the towers.

The centre piece is the tower of steel commemorating the emergency services killed in the response. This was the last piece to be removed from ground zero.

The students all seemed to understand and respect the significance of this memorial to the day that changed the modern world.

Textiles:
We got a big sleep in today because we didn't have to be anywhere until 1pm for the Garment District tour, unfortunately due to rescheduling we were unable to join the rest of the group for the 9/11 memorial but we had an amazing day. Our tour guide Imani was so vibrant and was an inspiration. We started our tour at Macy's where the students had a fun collaborative challenge. Imani showed us a dress from her collection and how she had to consider target market and budget when designing, her dress was a summer dress that had to be appropriate for both the New York cliental who love to wear black and also needing to appeal to her Caribbean cliental who like more prints and colours. The first challenge she gave the students was to find an alternative pattern that would suit the same needs and had 10 mins in two groups to find two fabrics. The second challenge was to consider the dress in their fabric and to completely accessorise it according to a given event, one group had a music festival and the other had a Marc Jacobs fashion show. Their final challenge was to come up with a marketing and promotional strategy to get the attention of the fashion editor at Vogue Magazine. This was really fun for the students and got them thinking critically and working together. In the free time at Moods the students looked at all the amazing fabrics and even got a picture with Swatch the dog off Project Runway!. Next on the tour we went to a promotional magazine shop that stocked all the great fashion magazines of New York, we all anted to buy some but they were massive and would have taken up our entire weight allowance in our bags! We visited Custom Fabric Flowers that hand make flowers for all kinds of high profile businesses, we watched how the flowers were made which was incredible and extremely time consuming! They fist stiffen the fabric, and then cut the shape, then they use hot presses to individually press the shape of the petal into the fabric and let it cool before individually glueing each petal together and letting them hang to dry, the owner of the shop gave us all some corsages to take home. They had shelves and shelves of different iron press shapes for all the different types of flowers.
We also visited two fashion and art studios that had local designers trying to get their work out in the market.

Evening:
This evening we all went to The Hard Rock Cafe for dinner, we had such a great time and got lots of souvenirs for you back home, yummy choices on the menu, we had burgers, salads and had cookies for desert. Some students got a photo with a couple of police officers outside.
