Day 5 - 15th April

Today started with a subway ride to the Brooklyn Market, the subway we took was wonderfully empty which meant we all got a seat, ideal for a 30 minute ride. Today was freezing, a low of 2 degrees! A massive shock after yesterdays 24 degrees. This meant that there weren't as many stalls at the market, however it was still packed with interesting first and second hand stalls, the students loved all the vintage clothes and collectable items. Brooklyn was more "funky" and down to earth.
After our time at the Market we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, although very cold and windy it was an amazing experience and we could see right into Manhattan Island, our walk took us all the way to the Empire State Building where we had Subway for lunch. The tour through the Empire State Building well organised and the view was better than you could ever imagine. Even the elevator had a video playing on the ceiling with information as we went up to the middle of the building and then to the top. We could walk all the way around the sides and see all the way over the city, it was fun to point out buildings we knew and play guesses to where Times Square was, scattered across the city was golden roof tops, a Nike tick roof top garden and other interesting points that you can only see from the top.
From the Empire State Building walked to Macy's and the students had free time in the area, unfortunately buy the end of this time it had started to rain and became very unpleasant, we quickly scurried underground and took the subway back to the hostel. A delicious dinner prepared by the teachers consisted of roasted chicken, chips and salad with fresh fruit for dessert. A fun yet relaxing day despite the bad weather. The students are wonderful and it means that our 'family' is always uplifted by the behaviours of others, everyone is very excited for the week ahead and looking forwards to the subject specific activities.
