Textiles:
Textiles students had an early start at Parsons/ The New School. Unfortunately due to a fire we were unable to see all of it but we walked through all of the campus and viewed all of their amazing spaces, we discovered that one year at Parsons was $79,000! After our visit at Parsons we walked down fifth Avenue (shopping area). The instructions were "no stopping here we are going to a second hand shop", we did however pause for a photo infant of the Flatiron building. This was very difficult for some of them not to want to go into every second shop! However our final destination at Buffalo Exchange which was a huge new and second hand shop, we all looked very trendy after our time there. Next we went to The Fashion Institute of Technology Museum. On display was the history of garments and information about the designer, a sample of the discussed garment and social considerations of todays fashion and self image, there was even a sample of Kim Kardashians sheer mesh dress. After this we headed back to the hostel for a rest before going out to Lion King.
Digi Tech:
For our second group day we headed the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. We walked through the Growler, a submarine used in the late 50s that carried nuclear missiles for defensive purposes. We then headed onto the U.S.S. Intrepid aircraft carrier for self-guided tours around the flight, gallery and hangar decks. The Intrepid was in service for the Vietnam and Cold Wars. It's enormous size was mind-blowing (beds were luxurious compared to those on the Growler). The flight deck was covred with an eclectic collection of aircraft. A pavillion on seck housed the space shuttle "Explorer" which was huge and impressive. The lads all opted to go on the flight simulator which was enjoyed by both those in the pod and those watching.
After many hours at Intrepid we decided to head back to the subway station which allowed for a sneak peek at the edge of Times Square & grab a very late lunch of turkish kebabs.
Food:
The Food Technology team had a late start today, appreciate the sleep in. We took a subway back over to Brooklyn to visit the funky suburbs and vintage clothing stores among the alternative cafes in the Bushwick area. We meet a chef and owner of Abracadabra Circus Cafe, Dilara Erbay. She was a fascinating woman whose intimate cafe reflected her personality...full of life, love and passion for people. She had a twin swing set, that customers could sway gently at the food bar, a Turkish menu catering for vegans, coeliacs and meat lovers. We also glossed over the shelves at Whole Foods Supermarket, fascinated with trolleys full of food going up on its own elevator to the cashiers. making choices for snacks was time consuming!
Evening:
This evening we dressed up and headed into Time Square to watch Lion King at Minskoff Theatre. The experiences keep getting better and better! The costumes were spot on, their voices were incredible and the sets were more than you could ever imaging, the whole theatre building was decorated in the Lion King theme down to the finest detail, we all agreed that it was the best show we have ever seen.
